AUSTIN, Texas, Sept. 15, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- Congratulations to Brown & Root on being honored with the prestigious Best-In-Class Award at the 38th Annual Safety Excellence Awards (SAE), presented by the Industry Business Roundtable (IBR) and Health and Safety Council (HASC). This recognition reflects their commitment to innovation and safety, a commitment perfectly demonstrated by their successful deployment of the MX3 Diagnostics Hydration Testing System. As record-breaking heat waves become the norm, the economic and human toll of heat stress is escalating across the United States. In 2022, OSHA even released a National Emphasis Program (NEP) to ensure that employees in high-hazard industries are protected from heat-related hazards. According to national data, heat-related illnesses and fatalities are on the rise, costing the U.S. economy an estimated $100 billion annually in lost productivity. On top of that, thousands of workers suffer heat-related injuries and dozens lose their lives each year. This crisis underscores a critical need for new, data-driven prevention strategies. Brown & Root, one of the nation's leading industrial services providers with a workforce of 10,000 employees, turned to technology to tackle this challenge head-on and enhance its existing protocols. Determined to raise the bar for workforce safety, the company implemented the MX3 Hydration Testing System, a portable, saliva-based diagnostic tool that delivers instant hydration status anytime, anywhere. MX3 allows employers to proactively test workers to identify dehydrated individuals, educate, and spur behavior change, leading to a safer workforce over time. Additionally, measurements can be captured in real-time to a powerful dashboard so management can identify trends and make data-driven decisions to proactively prevent heat stress incidents. As detailed in their SEA Best Practices presentation, Brown & Root conducted a case study on a pilot site with the MX3 Hydration Testing System during the summer of 2024, and the results were immediate and significant. They tested 50 workers per day, covering 75% of the workers onsite each week. This proactive strategy delivered measurable impact: a steady reduction of dehydrated test scores week-over-week, leading to a remarkable achievement of zero heat-related incidents during the case study period. "The enhanced engagement that this tool provided allowed new and different conversations about hydration, which led to a summer without a heat-related incident at our pilot site," said Chris Heisler of Brown & Root. "Hydration is the first line of defense against heat stress," said Michael Luther, CEO of MX3 Diagnostics. "Brown & Root's achievement is proof that when organizations have access to real-time hydration data, safety outcomes can improve dramatically. That's the power of MX3." As rising heat continues to challenge industries across the U.S., MX3 Diagnostics remains committed to helping companies like Brown & Root protect their most valuable asset—their people. Mine sites have long used urine testing to gauge how hydrated workers are but this is not always practical and is becoming less ideal with a growing female workforce. MX3 Diagnostics has developed a much more user-friendly system—a handheld saliva swab which provides an instant result as to how hydrated the worker is. The device was rolled out at Newcrest’s Telfer mine in 2020 as a trial and has since being picked up by other companies through word of mouth.
