Over the last 20 years, researchers have identified saliva as a rich source of biomarkers that can be used to monitor health and wellness, including hormones, metabolites, nucleic acids and more. Collection of saliva is safer and less invasive than blood or urine, making it an excellent candidate for field testing of health status without the need for trained medical staff.
Saliva analysis is not without challenges. Unlike blood, which is tightly regulated by the body, saliva can vary greatly in volume, viscosity, consistency and acidity. Additionally, the concentration of most analytes is much lower in saliva than other bodily fluids, mandating high sensitivity-detection techniques. Because of these challenges, very few saliva tests have made their way out of the laboratory. Until now.
